The Full Story

Hello, my name is Sam and I am the owner of  Wicked Wands. I  was born in 1997 and grew up in the small town of  Locust North Carolina. As a young child my little brother, next-door neighbor, and I would play outside as small-town kids do. Our favorite characters to play were Harry, Ron, and Hermione as the first Harry Potter movie was just coming out, there were 3 of us so it just fit. We would pick up sticks and use them as wands. Fight dragons in the forbidden forest, which was just some pine trees down the road, we would even steal the brooms from our kitchens and play Quidditch out in the horse pasture.

when I started grade school I always excelled in art class, but as I aged and was diagnosed with ADHD I quickly realized I didn't have the ability or patience to sit and draw or paint. Around the age of 10, my school participated in what was known as the Art Olympics. The Art Olympics was a select group of students from schools all over the region who competed in timed and prompted art-related projects and challenges. I was lucky enough to be able to do this for 3 years until I aged out. This opened my eyes to the world of art.

Going through grade school I gained the "Sam can do it, she crafty" title which I didn't mind. I remember stealing all the cardboard and single-use plastic out of the trash to hot glue together and made little cities and villages. So naturally, once I hit high school I picked up a love for architecture. At age 16 I decided I was going to build a school bus into a tiny home one day and travel to see the world. I spent nearly every extracurricular class in architecture and art exceeding the 4th tear in each class.

Unfortunately with battling ADHD my grades weren't enough to pursue an architectural degree instead I went to my local community college and achieved an Associates in Arts Degree and an Associates in Science Degree. Since then I have worked several small jobs but never gave up my passion for art and architecture. So, some random day in 2017 I picked up a stick and started to carve it with my pocket knife, as you can imagine it took quite some time for a wand to actually take shape but none the less I made it happen; thus starting my fascination for woodworking. For a few years, I made several wands for family and friends and just recently opened an online shop for the public. Thanks to Tik Tok and my close net support group that pushed me to own my own business.

P.S. I finally built that school bus with my partner Erik, and we now live in it full-time with our dog Ellie.
